What is meant by Loss and Damage? Find out how this relates to climate change. | Oxfam GB | Oxfam UK

“The deadly impacts of climate change are here and now. Loss & Damage can no longer be swept under the rug.” –António Guiterres, Secretary General of the UN.
‘Loss & Damage’ is a term we’re hearing a lot in the news lately. It is a key focus at the COP27 –the current Climate Conference, and simply means the destruction caused by the climate crisis. But for people around the world who are on the frontline of climate change, it means more than that. It means paying the ultimate price despite having done the least to cause the crisis. It means facing the increasing risk of having your home washed away by rising sea levels. It means floods swallowing up your community. It means braving wildfires to save people, animals, homes and wildlife. It means losing your income as harvests fail due to severe drought. It means lives lost.
Who should pay?
Those who contribute most to the climate crisis have a duty to pay for the loss and damage they are inflicting on communities bearing the brunt.
Climate Activists like Abigael, Loliwe, and Perk are joining forces with people around the world to demand a Loss and Damage fund –paid for by the worst polluters –so that funds can flow to frontline communities.
