Refill App celebrates 250,000 downloads

The Refill app shows people where they can refill their water-bottle with tab water for free at cafes, restaurants, local businesses and other public places. More than 250,000 people so far have already downloaded the app.

The average person in the UK will use 150 plastic bottles every year. Every single day 700,000 plastic bottles are littered in the UK. Plastic bottles by now make up one-third of all plastic pollution in the sea. In the UK, less than 30% of people refill their reusable water bottles. The Refill app makes it easier to tackle plastic waste in helping to find over 23,000+ refill stations all over England, Scotland and Wales.

One of the 10 best sustainable apps in Vogue

The app was recently trending at number 2 for travel apps on the android store and was named in the 10 best sustainable apps in Vogue. Since the beginning of the year app downloads have increased by 175% and the number of active users has increased by 422%. That’s an incredibly strong growth, taking into account that the app in the first year (2016-2017) had only around 6,000 app users!

“What started out as a local Bristol campaign has now grown to become an internationally used app for people looking to refill their water bottle over buying a plastic bottle”, says Lanie Sibley, Refill app, Digital Product Manager at City to Sea, the organisation behind the Refill campaign. City to Sea estimate Refill will have saved over 100 million single-use bottles from entering our waste stream by the end of 2019.

  1. This app is unfortunately UK only but the Refill movement can be found internationally. In Austria for example, Graz is a leading example and uses maps to show refill stations:
