Liberal and conservative language and brain structure

Hello engrossed people,

We’ve all been in the situation where we were discussing politics with someone and wanted to change the other persons opinion. We probably had a lot of fervent arguments we were convinced of but in the end, it was all for nothing. But why? Why is it so hard to help someone else see the value of our arguments? Well, if we want to change others’ opinion, we have to understand the way they think first. So, if you are either a liberal or conservative thinker, continue reading and you’ll find out how you can convince anyone of the validity of your ideology.

In contrast to conservatives, liberals’ main focus are care and equality. Conservatives put their emphasis on patriotism, loyalty and purity. That’s the reason why conservatives will not understand what liberals mean if they present their arguments in a way that appeals to the ethics of their own sides, mainly to the ideas of care and equality. So, if liberals wanted to change the opinion of conservatives on refugees, they should mention that all what their ancestors wanted was to live the American dream and that’s also why refugees have chosen to come to this country. That message is well- connected with patriotism and loyalty and can therefore be understood by conservatives.

The brain of liberals is different from the brain of conservatives. Scientists have found out that liberals have a larger Anterior Cingulate Cortex, which is the part of the brain associated with understanding and monitoring difficult conflicts. Conservatives have a larger Amygdala which helps to process fear and anxiety. As a result of these different brain structures liberals and conservatives deal differently with the same stimuli, i.e. pain and their reactions against solidity, the observation that liberals and conservatives work with, separate material to start with.

So why do people think how they think? Weather we have a more conservative or liberal ideology relates to a lot of different facts. Personal experiences, environment, education but also genetics are big parts of how our attitude is put together. However, that does not mean we can’t change our ideologies with time.

If you aren’t content with your political stance surround yourself with the opposite and try to understand.
