Looking for an alternative way to stay fit? All over the UK you can find Green Gyms. These free outdoor sessions combine volunteering with gardening and practical activities such as planting trees, sowing meadows and establishing wildlife ponds. You learn about environmental conservation and get a fitness workout at the same time.
“In fact, almost a third more calories can be burnt in some Green Gym sessions than in an average aerobics class!”, says organiser TCV, The community volunteering charity.
A study undertaken by the University of Westminster showed that Green Gym participants reported higher levels of well-being and lower levels of stress, anxiety and depression.
Everyone is welcome, no previous gardening knowledge or fitness level necessary.
